Hi cutie! 💋 Greetings from Munich! Or technically this should saunter in your inbox when I’m in Berlin. I’m in the midst of studying fairy tales in Europe, and as such our bi-weekly essay is arriving…probably next Wednesday. But the good news is that you’re getting TWO traveling playlists today, the first of which is about Copenhagen!
Copenhagen reeled me in because of Hans Christian Andersen, a cherished fairy tale author. So HCA was kind of a mess, but a true original. Like, much love to the Brothers Grimm, but they were more like collectors of stories. Hans made a really loud case for taking your broken heart and making it into art, and we’ll get into that more in the next essay. And there is a musical tie, kids, I am just allowing this newsletter and definition of “musical mythology” to evolve, to mean more than one thing. And I appreciate you going on that journey with me.
For now I’ll say this: I loved the bright seaside magic of Copenhagen, I’m having a world of fun uncovering the dark roots of Disneyfied folkore, and it is not cheap. 💙💚 So if you’ve been thinking of upgrading to premium, now’s a great time.
‘Till then, this playlist is about: National treasure Danny Kaye, murderous red ballet shoes, transformation, strolling down Nyhavn, living in the truth of a deep side part, “there's rosemary, that's for remembrance,” 2015 Disney Princess listicles, Rusalochka, turning into seafoam, shopping at Magasin Du Nord, a swanlike neck, “Sister Golden Hair” coming on during your hotel’s wine hour, raspberry cake at Tivoli Gardens, being just a Little Mermaid, “a dancer who relies upon the doubtful comforts of human love can never be a great dancer,” SJP as Princess Winnifed, Hans Christian Andersen and wonderful, wonderful, Copenhagen, land of fairytales. 🧜♀️
